The Australian Hotel is a heritage-listed building in the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority Heritage Register and the Millers Point Conservation Area. Since its construction in 1913, the mortar bed reinforcement in the masonry walls corroded resulting in movement within the external wall requiring structural improvements including the engagement of floors and remedy of awning ties.
SJA worked with a structural engineer versed in heritage buildings to resolve structural solutions and construction methodologies to enable the structural upgrade of this building.
SJA also managed the development of a cost plan for a business case as well as overseeing the development of a heritage impact statement to support a future Heritage Act Section 60 Application for the works. SJA brought an understanding of construction sequencing to inform the conduct of these structural upgrade works and their coordination with separate works responding to a fire upgrade order issued by the City of Sydney on Property NSW as Landlord to The Australian.
