The Fortune of War Hotel is an inter-war period building and retains much of its original fabric and finishes, predominantly its highly intact main bar. The site has historical significance as part of the site of the colony’s first hospital and as the location of a development built circa 1830. SJA was engaged as the project manager to investigate and determine the necessary steps to restore the façade, roof terrace, and structural seismic elements.
SJA’s role as project manager was to deliver advice in conjunction with heritage, engineering and architectural consultants up until Investigation and Structural Design stage. The objective was to chiefly identify which critical parts of the building are weak points with resolutions proposed, as well as to provide future recommendations to reach a satisfactory level of seismic performance. SJA’s foremost focus was the determination of the structural deficiencies and providing solutions to progress forward with the consultation services by the engineer, architect, and PNSW Heritage Division
